“After eight years in the making, filmed in Italy and the U.S., We are excited to be finishing up the Milan 2016 born documentary project
“Portrait in Steps.”
The film is an intimate biographical interview and story telling portrait by the artist produced by Italian Filmmaker Tiziano Sossi that dives into various cultural stages of Marcus Jansen's life and art career. It covers five decades from humble beginnings in the Bronx in 1968 through his European experience being transplanted to Germany and later his military assignments that ultimately transformed his life leading to taking critical positions socially, historically, politically and painterly, while starting out selling art in New York City. SOHO district street corners.
Sossi, covers from Jansen's family to the most recent museum shows and incudes private footage including film from his Florida Fortress studios in SW Florida in 2023.
"From Robert Henri, Willem de Kooning, Arshile Gorky to Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jansen is an American, or better a New Yorker, to the marrow. I think he represents, together with British artists Cecily Brown and Peter Doig, the best part of the great contemporary art, that is rising, in terms of criticism, audience."

“We started shooting during Marcus Jansen first ever museum solo show eight years ago titled,
“Marcus Jansen DECADE / Paintings form the last ten years,” at La Triennale di Milano that had a traveling monograph titled "Marcus Jansen, DECADE," printed by Skira Editore. The exhibition wound up being selected "top 10 critics pic," in Italy, by La Repubblica.
The film draws parallels between his life and art journey and what served as a catalyst to his criticism.
